The Adams Strategy Group was conceived when David Adams returned from being recalled to active duty by the US Navy shortly following the terrorist attacks on the US on 11 September 2001. As a career active and reserve Naval Officer, David had been a lifelong student of leadership and strategy.
After his return to civilian life, David continued to learn about leadership and strategy deployment, working with organizations to develop his Value-Centric Leadership model. In 2005, he took the helm of the Center for Operational Excellence at the Saint Vincent College McKenna School of Business, Economics and Government in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Adams still works in the McKenna School, teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses in operational excellence and leadership.
During his tenure at the Center, David enjoyed mentorship by several world class coaches. David’s primary coach was Mr. Rodger Lewis, continuing their relationship even to today. Lewis had a unique approach to operational excellence strategy. Lewis had learned deeply from his time as an original General Manager at Toyota Motor Manufacturing’s Kentucky plant in Georgetown. One of only a handful of leaders there with automotive assembly executive experience, Lewis had a personal sensei from Toyota, immersing him in the Toyota Way as he learned the Toyota Production System. Lewis then moved on to work for General Motors and Bombardier, we he continues to coach transformation. Lewis had uncovered one of the keys to operational excellence / lean transformation: start with the people first – work on changing the culture before rushing to team improvement.
Lewis and Adams began to refine a system for doing just that. As lean thinkers began to discover that lean tools, alone, would not get sustained change, Adams and Lewis were already working with organizations, testing the “culture first” theory.
At Saint Vincent, Adams sharpened his education delivery skills and began to form his thoughts on leadership and strategy as they relate to operational improvement and growth from innovation. Combining what he learned with Lewis and his many engagements, Adams designed a more robust, systematic change engine that speeds transformation towards world class performance.
In 2014, David and Roberta Adams started the Adams Strategy Group, Inc., a boutique management consultancy that specializes in operational excellence strategy. The Adams Strategy Group designs the architecture and execution support for business transformations using operational excellence as the change strategy. It also serves an organization’s primary education resource.
