South Shore Health System | Operational Excellence (Lean) Assessment
South Shore Health System represents a cutting edge and diverse healthcare organization in Weymouth, Massachusetts. The system is made up of South Shore Hospital, South Shore Medical Center and the various support services to these inpatient and outpatient settings serving Eastern Massachusetts. In fact, South Shore Hospital is the largest independently operated hospital in Eastern Massachusetts.
South Shore engaged the Adams Strategy Group (ASG) to study its current operational excellence strategy and execution. South Shore was using a lean system as the visible face of the continuous improvement part of the operational strategy.
Adams Strategy Group (ASG) conducted a 28-point operational excellence system and strategy assessment for South Shore Health System. Using interviews with the key system leaders, ASG did an initial evaluation for the system components in use and the current strategic directions. Based on this data, ASG designed a survey instrument used with a study group comprised of executive and director level leaders, line leaders, and internal continuous improvement staff. ASG then analyzed the questionnaire for gaps and designed a set of interview questions for the survey group. ASG conducted face-to-face interviews to round out the analysis. ASG also spent time observing artifacts of continuous improvement. Based on these data, ASG created a comprehensive report that included both short term and long range recommendations. ASG subdivided the recommendations into those that the internal teams could execute and those requiring external help.
South Shore’s Director for Lean Thinking, Keith Murphy says:
As a new Director of Lean Thinking at a small health system in the Boston area (Can use our name if you think ok) we used Adams Strategy Group to conduct an independent current state assessment of our Lean transformation efforts to date. Our health system has been practing Lean based process improvement for 4 years with variable results. With a recent change in our CEO it seemed a good time to step back and assess the status of our efforts to both improve performance and develop a culture of improvement and problem solving.
David and his team conducted a survey of key leaders and stakeholders as well as conducting one-on-one meetings to collect data and insights on our organization’s ability to apply many of the key concepts related to an organizational Lean transformation. David and his team provided a detailed report of their findings that we have been able to use as a guide as we continue improve our approach.
Overall I appreciate David’s approach of getting to know and working with people while also sharing his expertise and knowledge with you. He is truly a humble leader that can add value to many situations.
ASG’s standardized model for assessment is a useful tool for beginning or renewing a lean, operational excellence or another continuous improvement journey. The model assesses the human system strategy as it interfaces with the operational strategy via its continuous improvement strategy. The result is a comprehensive and cohesive report that allows the client to hit the ground running with short term do-it-yourself recommendations.
