South Shore Health System | Physician Leadership Course
South Shore Health System represents a cutting edge and diverse healthcare organization in Weymouth, Massachusetts. The system is made up of South Shore Hospital, South Shore Medical Center and the various support services to these inpatient and outpatient settings serving Eastern Massachusetts. In fact, South Shore Hospital is the largest independently operated hospital in Eastern Massachusetts.
South Shore’s Dr. Luke O’Connell, Chairman of the Board, Health Providers Services Organization, said about the ASG course:
I have been through several leadership courses over the past few years but the most recent with Dave Adams was certainly the most valuable. Dave’s easy going manner made the sessions a pleasure and the way the leadership concepts were tied to real life projects at our institution made the work not only more interesting but more concrete and more valuable.
The South Shore physician education team engaged the Adams Strategy Group (ASG) to design then deliver a five-part (six month) curriculum. The curriculum requirements were to provide the physicians with both didactic and practical experiences to apply learned concepts for:
- Influence: motivation and generating accountability
- Navigation: strategy development and decision-making
- Philosophy: developing a personal set of leadership characteristics like judgment and humility
- Continuous Improvement: the centrality of pure, standardized problem-solving methods
- Tactics: basic financial concepts, communication and team building
These five main areas define David Adams’ Five Framework Model for Practical Leadership. This model is the basis for ASG’s work in Operational Excellence leadership.
Developed over three decades, the model provides a good structure for attaching more advanced concepts as the leader grows.
Focusing on applying leadership to everyday experiences, ASG provided a combination of classroom and in situ exercises culminating in active cohort-based discussions. ASG worked with two 15-person cohorts in two different locations. ASG also convened online video conference talks between face-to-face sessions and provided individualized coaching where requested.
ASG is currently working on a second level – Advanced Practical Leadership for Continuous Improvement – at the request of the physicians in the first two cohorts. This advanced course will focus in on the physician’s role in leading clinical problem-solving efforts across disciplines and functions.
